Who benefits from Dialectical Parenting?
Dialectical Parenting is appropriate for teens who:
… experience symptoms that interfere with their daily functioning including OCD, ADHD, anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicidal ideation, or eating disorders
… are unwilling to engage in individual therapy or refuse to follow treatment recommendations (e.g., completing exposures, taking medication, attending school)
… struggle with issues that are outside the scope of traditional individual therapy models (e.g., lying, theft)
… are currently enrolled in, or transitioning down from, a higher-level of care
Dialectical Parenting is appropriate for caregivers who:
… feel like they have tried everything
… know their teen needs to engage in treatment, but can’t get them to follow through with recommendations
… struggle to get their teen to do the basics, like eating, showering, and going to school
… are concerned that episodes of emotion dysregulation are becoming more frequent and intense
… are overwhelmed by conflicting advice about their teen’s care
… feel helpless and wish they knew what to do when their teen is in crisis
… want to be more involved in supporting their teen’s treatment goals
